Grayling Empiricism, Kant and the Rationalists
Locke Michael Ayers (small book)
Philosophical readings in colour
stress familiarity with the primary texts history
I kind of do support PQ/SQ division, but it seems pointless
quantum theory has taken over
the SQs are there insofar as there is a systematic causal relation between the objects and our idea of them
however, these SQs are reducible to PQs and derive their quality from the interaciton with our perceptual mechanisms
it comes down to the fundamental irreducibility of PQs
all comes down to theory of mind
3 senses of Lockes use of idea + SQ
where do we want to locate SQs?
colour is a property located in both interaction
where is redness located? colour as property of objects or both?
is the pain caused by fire the same as redness?
different degrees of mind-dependence
dizziness vs colour
letter A on a whiteboard without us, means nothing
colour as a property in relation to perceivers like us
relational properties are real things that things have in relation to percipient
Locke didn't think that the PQ/SQ distinction was manifest in perception despite Aristotles distinction, Locke wanted a sci divide
perceptual relativity why isn't that enough of an argument for the PQ/SQ distinction
Berkeley moon bigger near horizon
args against SQ as relational properties held by most scientists
resemblance imagistic account of ideas
